1969

Fleetwood Mac spend the most weeks on the chart and have their only number one, ‘Albatross’ (Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Jeremy Spencer, Danny Kirwan and Peter Green)

15th Jan – Ob La Di Ob La Da does the same as previous week’s Lily The Pink by climbing back to number one.

5th Feb – Dancing In The Street does much better 2nd time around, it peaked at 28 in 1964.

19th March – Peter Sarstedt reaches number 1, his brother Eden Kane topped the chart in 1961 (the McCartney brothers did the same but as part of groups)  it will be 1972 before this happens again – for the Osmonds.

19th March – The Righteous Brothers’  ‘You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ is the first single to be a top 10 hit on separate occasions. The hat-trick will happen in 1990.

23rd April – The Beatles go straight in at number 1, their 16th chart-topper.

4th June – Tommy Roe’s last top 10 was in 1963 when The Beatles knocked themselves off the number 1 spot. This time Tommy manages to reach number 1 for a week which stops The Beatles managing the trick again.

25th June – The Beatles’ last week at number one.

2nd July – Elvis returns to the top 10 after a 3 year absence. He is kept off the top by Thunderclap Newman with a song produced by Pete Townshend, which is the only No.1 that any member of The Who will be involved in.

30th August – Nine weeks after The Beatles, The Rolling Stones fall from the No.1 spot never to return.

30th August – The only Bee Gees hit not to feature Robin Gibb reaches the top 10 in the same week as Robin Gibb’s only solo top 10 hit.

11th Oct – Bob Dylan’s final top 10.

13th Dec – Sugar Sugar completes an eight week run at the top, the longest ever by a 1-hit wonder.
