The Beatles launch their Apple label with 2 number one’s – their own ‘Hey Jude’ and Mary Hopkin’s ‘Those Were The Days’.
Here they are (minus George) with Donovan, Cilla Black, Brian Jones and a band called Grapefruit at the launch party.

10th Jan – Beatles 3rd week at number 1 and 2, while Paul McCartney’s brother has his first top 10 hit as part of Scaffold.

14th Feb – Manfred Mann become the first group to have number 1’s with 2 different lead singers.

28th Feb – Esther and Abi Ofarim become the first husband and wife since Sonny and Cher to reach the top.

13th March – 3 consecutive girls names in song titles – Rosie, Jennifer Juniper and Delilah.

13th March – Three months after his death, Otis Redding achieves his only top 10 hit.

24th April – Louis Armstrong becomes the oldest person to top the charts, aged 67.

21st August – Mony Mony returns to the top, the first record to do this since 1965.

11th Sep – A good first week for apple, Hey Jude makes the 2nd biggest leap to number 1 and Those Were The Days is the highest new entry of the year.

25th Sep – Mary Hopkins will be the last British female single to top the charts until Tina Charles in 1976.
