3rd March – The Stones spend 3 weeks at number two, behind Nancy Sinatra. A few months later they will spend a couple more at number two, behind Frank.
17th March – Nancy Sinatra falls from 1 to 9, same positions as Temperance Seven five years earlier. But the record still stands with Harry Belafonte’s ‘Mary’s boy child’ which fell to 12 in 1958.
14th April – The Hollies fall from 3 to 25, the first time a record in the top 3 falls outside the top 20.
21st April – Two versions of ‘The Elusive Butterfly’ with Val Doonican’s version peaking at 5 this week while Bob Lind’s peaked a fortnight earlier – also at 5.
26th May – The Stones ‘Paint It black’ is their 6th number 1, half of those chart toppers, including this one, spent just a week at the top.
19th May – Pretty Flamingo is the first animal number one since Little Red Rooster in Dec 64. The next will be Albatross in 1969.
16th June – Paperback Writer is a new entry at number 2, the highest new entry since Cliff’s Summer Holiday went straight to number 1 in Jan 1962.
22nd Sep – Jim Reeves reaches number one over two years since his death.
17th Nov – ‘Good Vibrations’ makes it 3 consecutive number one’s for America, the first time that has happened since 20/07/61.
15th Dec – ‘Friday on my mind’ reaches the top 10, as did ‘Monday Monday’ earlier in the year. The next days of the week top 10 will be 1967’s Ruby Tuesday.
