Elvis Presley. Four Number Ones in 1961.

26th Jan – ‘Are you lonesome tonight’ becomes the first single outside of the top 10 to jump to number one (from 19)

9th March – Britain’s Eurovision entry ‘ Are you sure’ starts a run of 6 weeks at number two.

27th April – Cliff’s ‘Gee whizz its you’ is only available as an import but still makes the top 10.

25th May – George Martin’s first ever number one as a producer thanks to the Temperance Seven.

1st June – Biggest chart number 1 fall as Temperance Seven fall to 9 while Elvis records the biggest leap to number 1 – from 27.

22nd June – Top 4 all by American male singers.

10th August – Helen Shapiro becomes the youngest ever chart-topper aged 14 years and 310 days.

7th Sept – The top 8 are all British acts.

14th Sept – Elvis’ Wild in the country peaks at number 4 halting his run of 4 consecutive number ones.

19th Oct – A sixth new number one for the sixth consecutive week.

19th Oct – 3 songs with men’s names in the title stay in the top10 together for three weeks.
